Louis Tomlinson is back in the solo ring… kind of.
Following the release of his Steve Aoki collaboration “Just Hold On” at the tail end of last year, the former One Direction-er has announced that he’s signed a solo recording deal with Epic Records – and “Back To You” is our first taste of what’s to come from his forthcoming full-length debut LP, due out later this year.
Unlike the dance-driven “Just Hold On,” “Back To You” featuring Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals finds Louis lacing his sweet vocals up against some infectious finger snaps, lingering piano melodies, and hi-octane bright pop beats on the instantly catchy, jam all about being in a hate/love relationship.
“Whoah, you stress me out, you kill me/ You drag me down, you fuck me up/ We’re on the ground, we’re screaming/ I don’t know how to make it stop/ I love it, I hate it, and I can’t take it/ But I keep on coming back to you…,” Bebe sings on the first chorus round. Yupp, Louis arrives late to his own party, casually strolling into the production around the 0:58 mark.
The standard pop song structure (verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge) and Bebe and Louis‘ sweet croonage actually makes this one a total winner – a total breath of fresh that is perfectly suited for the radio. My one issue? “Back To You” is truly solid, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that it plays a little like a Bebe song featuring Louis Tomlinson. Could you allow yourself to be the only talent on your next single, Louis? Don’t get me wrong, ya’ll know I love me some Bebe, but I’d really love to hear what an actual Louis Tomlinson single sounds like. Ya dig?
Louis opened up to BBC about why the song starts with Bebe singing: “We recorded a version where I sang first – but you’ve got to do what’s best by the song,” he said. “With the emotion she gives it, and the way she opens up the song, it always had to be her, really.”
