‘Switch’: Iggy Azalea Teams Up With Anitta On A Proper Summer Jam!

It’s Iggy Iggz / Whatcha want?,” is the opening line of the newest single from rapper Amethyst Amelia Kelly, otherwise known as Iggy Azalea (or Igloo Australia if you’re Azealia Banks).

Iggy, I’ll tell you what I want. I want a summer jam. And thankfully, you’ve delivered.

After a pair of flop singles (“Team” and “Mo Bounce”)—Iggy recently took to Twitter to acknowledge the failure of “Mo Bounce” and maintain that it was an official single and not just a buzz track—the outspoken rapper is officially back with “Switch” featuring Brazilian singer Anitta. “Switch” is a return to Iggy‘s tried and truly winning formula of having a female singer on the chorus, and it pays off here. The bass-heavy beat slinks right along as Queen Big Booty Iggy raps about the usual fare: How her ass deserves applause, how nobody can f*ck with her, and how she’s changing the game. There are plenty of one-liners delivered by Iggy that will pop up on Instagram (maybe even on mine) this summer, and it seems that she’s been working on improving her flow. As for the chorus? It’s, dare I say… Epic? Anitta and Iggy‘s voices blend perfectly, and to me, this is one of the most immediately catchy songs I’ve heard in a while. It’s also tailor-made for radio. “Red light / Yellow light / Green light / Switch” is going to be in my head every time I walk across the street.

Iggy has been more active on social media lately, posting a sneak peek of the video shoot for “Switch” (which Katy Perry approved of, by the way) and answering fan questions. Aside from being a dance-able summer bop that is the “most pop leaning song on [Digital Distortion],” Iggy says that “Switch” is about “saying: I’m in control. I say when you have it, when you can’t, and how you get it.”

It’s good to hear her back and seemingly in a better headspace than before, and I truly hope that this becomes the hit that—let’s be honest here—she very desperately needs. I can’t help but think of the irony in her releasing a song about switching up the game when in fact she’s going back to what got her a hit in the first place – but you know what? I’ll let her have it.

As of now, Digital Distortion is set to be released next month, but after a year’s worth of delays, it’s hard to tell what will happen with the album. In the meantime, crank up the volume on “Switch” and get to dancing with the baddest of them all!
