Swish swish bish…
Before she hits the stage as the musical guest for Saturday Night Live‘s season finale this weekend, Katy Perry unleashes yet another collaboration off of her upcoming album Witness (due out June 9), which has already spawned “Chained to the Rhythm” with Skip Marley and the Migos-assisted “Bon Appétit” – the latter has barely made an impact… anywhere.
This time, Katy‘s teamed up with the current reigning Rap Queen, Nicki Minaj, on their juicy #NoFucks haters banger: “Swish Swish,” produced by Noah “Mailbox” Passovoy, Duke Dumont, and PJ “Promnite” Sledge.
The track is already being pegged as Katy‘s subtle response to rival Taylor Swift, whose 1989 hit “Bad Blood” has long-assumed to be about the “I Kissed A Girl” hit-maker. “Don’t you come for me/ No, not today/ You’re calculated/ I’ve got your number/ Because you’re a joke/ And I’m a courtside killer queen/ And you will kiss the ring/ You best believe,” Katy declares.
Much like PRISM‘s “Walking On Air,” the production is a total throwback to the days of early ’90’s House with its bright piano melodies, shouty ad-libs, cheesy lyrics (“You’re ’bout cute as an old coupon expired…“) and a throbber of a chorus strictly made for (gay) dance-floor dreams: “Swish, swish, bish/ Another one in the basket/ Can’t touch this/ Another one in the casket.”
Nicki‘s rap verse includes even more lyricism that sounds very pointed at Taylor: “Don’t be tryna double back/ I already despise you/ All that fake love you showin’/ Couldn’t even disguise you…“
Sure, “Swish Swish” comes loaded with click bait, some extra cheese and a not so revolutionary sound for pop music itself (the ’90’s House reemergence has been done), but it’s quite frankly the most immediate song we’ve heard from this era yet – And LAWD knows she needs it.
