Song of the Week: Tove Styrke ‘Say My Name’

This week’s Song of the Week comes from a Swede who’s spotlight on the blog has been long overdue: Tove Styrke!

Tove Anna Linnéa Östman Styrke got her big break on the Swedish version of American Idol at the tender age of 16. Since then, she’s reemerged with a fresh new image and even fresher sound, providing superbly catchy Swede-pop productions like “Borderline,” “Ego,” “Number One” and the still-amazing “…Baby One More Time,” which yes, is a cover of the Britney Spears classic.

Following 2015’s well-received album Kiddo, Tove makes her return with the first taste of album #3: “Say My Name“!

Much her previous work, the song relishes in cool groove of straight-forward vocals and infectious waves of sleek electronica. Yet once the chorus rolls around, it’s clear that Tove‘s now navigating in a simpler, more minimalist direction with her polished production: “Say my name/ Wear it out like a sweater that you love ’cause I can’t get enough when you/ Say my name/ Spill it out like a drink you should have skipped/ You’re the one I wanna get when you/ Say my name…,” Tove demands on the hook, aided by a bright and funky, ukulele riff. It’s a total earworm, and I can’t get enough!

“I’ve been hard at work in the studio for the past two years. It took me awhile to find this new direction, but when I finally found it everything just clicked for me. I love this sound and that it’s quite the opposite of what I did last time,” Tove told Pigeons and Planes. “It’s important for me to always keep reinventing myself and challenging myself creatively. I think that’s important in life in general, like, you don’t wanna feel like you know yourself. You should surprise yourself constantly.”

Tove Styrke’s new single “Say My Name” is also available on Apple Music!
