Hurts are back at it again!
After dropping their third studio album Surrender in the fourth quarter of 2015 (I’m still all about “Lights“), the British duo – Adam Anderson and Theo Hutchcraft – wasted no time hopping right back in the studio to record a follow-up — and “Beautiful Ones” is our first taste of Round 4.
While Hurts are famously known for their gloomy melodramatic approach and epic visuals, “Beautiful Ones” marks a more serious direction for the duo as they shine a prominent light on anti-LGBT violence with the empowering song’s accompanying music video – a subject that hits very close to home. Hurts themselves have described the song as a “celebration of individuality,” adding that the visual explores “hate, love, brutality and beauty.”
And that it does… The clip, which unfolds in reverse, sees frontman Theo dressed up as a gender-bending man who is stripped and brutally assaulted by three other men. As the video continues, you learn that one of these men had been rejected by Theo earlier in the night, making for one hell of a storyline. “Don’t think twice/ Give yourself to another night/ Hold on tight/ Hope that you make it out alive/ Ohh, we are the beautiful ones/ Ohh, we are the beautiful ones,” Theo chants throughout the soaring anthem.
I don’t even care if the song itself doesn’t quite match the greatness of their earlier work, the video alone is powerful enough. BRAVO!
