What would our week be like without something new from Nicki Minaj? This week is not the week to find out, as the rapper has continued her streak of releasing new content by dropping the music video for the Major Lazer and PARTYNEXTDOOR collab, “Run Up.”
With no prior warning (usually she teases the Barbz with cryptic tweets and a splash of emojis), the video was released today on Vevo and features a very accurate depiction of what it’s like to be at a party in 2017: everyone is on their phones, even when they’re dancing. There’s nothing wrong with your device, either. The otherwise sleek video intentionally incorporates buffering time during one of the party sequences.
Throughout the video, we see PND express his interest in a girl who doesn’t seem to notice him until the very end of the video when they finally connect on FaceTime. The twist? They’re sitting right next to each other. Before the end of the video, though, we see our denim-clad Nicki do FaceTime primping with her girls in a modern, softly-lit mansion. We get a little bit of choreo, we get duck faces, we get tongue, and we get twerking (of course). This is yet another collab video where we never see the artists in the same shot, and based on the video credits, production took place in both Los Angeles and Miami earlier this year. Oh, and Nicki‘s classic Barbie chain is back.
“The idea was to laugh at ourselves and at the unconditional love we bear to our smartphones,” directors Paul, Luc and Martin said of the music video in a statement. “Humor and absurdity came naturally in our speech because our will was not to accuse someone or something but just exaggerate it to foster reflection.”
