With The Valley just one week away from dropping on March 24th, Betty Who has decided to provide us with one more reassuring glimpse into her anticipated sophomore LP!
The Aussie songstress has had a very solid streak thus far in her The Valley album campaign, from the Justin Bieber-y “Human Touch” to the genuinely wonderful “Some Kinda Wonderful” to the simply sublime “You Can Cry Tomorrow.” She’s low-key slaying the pop game – and slaying it quite well!
Lucky for us, not only does Betty make great music, but she also has great taste in music too… including a guilt-free love for Britney Spears. So much so, in fact, that her latest The Valley cut “Mama Say” is actually dedicated to Miss American Dream herself.
“In case you didn’t know already, this is totally my ode to Britney Spears,” Betty told the Independent. “If you listen to the lyrics, half of them are hinting at Britney songs I’ve always loved. And then of course there’s the bridge where I literally feel like I’m walking through the cascading rain of the 2001 Live In Las Vegas HBO special she did wearing a clear cowboy hat with a boa constrictor around my neck.”
In true Brit Brit fashion, Betty laces her velvety smooth infectious vocals on-top of pulsing electro-pop beats and channels her inner Femme Fatale in the process, at least in the eyes of her lover’s mama. “Come with me, I’m what you need/ I light you up, ’cause I can see/ The fire in your eyes/ Welcome to your fantasy/ Your wildest dreams, I’ll show you things/ You never knew you liked,” she teases in the song’s opening lines.
Throughout the way you hear a brim of both lyrical and auditory nods (“How I Roll” production tricks) to the legendary pop star’s musical catalogue. Betty throws nods at “Pretty Girls” with “You know you love a pretty girl,” references “Baby One More Time” with “Give it to me one more time,” and there’s even a quick “I’m A Slave 4 U” moment with “Make me proud/ I’m your slave tonight.”
It’s “very fun and cool,” as our beloved Brit Brit would say – “Ooh, baby!“
Betty Who’s latest “Mama Say” is also available on Apple Music!
