It’s time for the rebirth of Lea Michele, or actually, the arrival of the real Lea Michele!
Three years after releasing her debut album Louder, which consisted heavily of Sia-penned tracks – the 30-year-old Scream Queens star is finally giving fans what they’ve been waiting for… new music! “When it came time for me to make my own album, I think it was a little clouded for me in terms of wanting to figure out what my own sound was,” Lea told Billboard about the process of making Louder. “And it was also clouded by a big tragedy that had happened to me, in the midst of making that album. And you hear that in that album — you hear the darkness of what was going on in my life. I don’t think there is a consistency to the record that I was hoping for, but that’s life.”
Lea‘s decided to take the a little more personal (raw) approach this time around. She’s not here to be like Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato or any other pop starlet. She’s here to be Lea Michele, god damn it – and “Love Is Alive” is our first taste of Round 2 titled Places.
As for the song itself, “Love Is Alive” is a beautiful, gut-wrenchingly vulnerable ballad, set across dramatic strings and a solemn piano melody. It’s a slow-moving and emotional production that keeps the focus entirely on Lea‘s full-bodied vocals, similar to the classics of Queen Celine Dion.
“Oh, can’t you hear it in my voice/ Oh, can’t you see it in my eyes/ Love, love is alive in me,” she cries out on the soaring hook. We all know that Lea is genuinely a gifted theatrical singer, and this is certainly further proof of that. Those howls at the end of the song, especially, are downright chilling and worthy of praise.
“It’s such a special song for me. I wanted a song on the album that represented where I am personally in my life right now, and this song is exactly that. It’s about believing in love and the power and beauty of love,” Lea said in a statement. “It made me so happy while recording it, and I hope it brings the same light and joy to everyone else as it has for me.”
