Ready, Set, Go: Lorde is back, but perhaps not quite in the way you were expecting – she’s hearing “brand new sounds” in her mind!
The New Zealand-born singer-songstress, who provided one of the best debut records in Pure Heroine back in 2013, has returned at last after endless teasing over the past few months with “Green Light,” the lead single from her long-awaited sophomore album, Melodrama. (Very fitting, no?)
The song and upcoming album was produced entirely by Bleachers frontman, Jack Antonoff! While talking to Zane Lowe and Beats 1, Lorde said the song is about “my first major heartbreak,” adding: “It’s not something that I really am used to writing about. It took me a while to be able to figure out how to write about that.”
“Thought you said that you would always be in love/ But you’re not in love no more/ Did it frighten you?/ How we kissed when we danced on the light up floor/ On the light up floor,” she sings on the refrain before the infectious dance beats, hammering drums and the fuzzy ’80’s-tinged synths begin to fill out the track. “But I hear sounds in my mind/ Brand new sounds in my mind…“
Then comes in the frantic chorus, which is an instant earworm: It’s sort of hopeful, angsty and epic-sounding all at once. You can almost see the green light – see what I did there – beaming at the end of the tunnel: “‘Cause honey I’ll, come get my things, but I can’t let go/ I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it/ Oh I wish I could get my things and just let go/ I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it.”
It’s going to be a much more confident and bigger sounding Lorde this time around. Y’all ready?
“I am so proud of this song. It’s very different, and kinda unexpected,” Lorde wrote in a series of tweets. “It’s complex and funny and sad and joyous and it’ll make you DANCE. It’s the first chapter of a story i’m gonna tell you, the story of the last 2 wild, fluorescent years of my life. This is where we begin. ‘GREEN LIGHT‘ debuts with a video directed by the inimitable Grant Singer.”
