It’s been a minute since we’ve gotten a decent bop from the usually inescapable Jason Derulo…
Both “If It Ain’t Love” and “Kiss The Sky” failed to match the success of “Want To Want Me,” causing his consistent run to come to a halt. Well, that’s all about to change with new single “Swalla.” With help from Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign, the infectious Ricky Reed-produced banger is simply undeniable as we see the fierce trio trading verses on-top of hypnotic, dancehall-tinged pulsations.
“Shimmy shimmy yay, shimmy yay, shimmy ya (drank)/ Swalla-la-la (drank)/ Swalla-la-la (swalla-la-la)/ Swalla-la-la/ Freaky, freaky gyal/ My freaky, freaky gyal,” Jason croons on the hook, which pulls inspiration from Ol’ Dirty Bastard‘s classic 1995 single “Shimmy Shimmy Ya.” Jason loves himself a good sample moment, here it works.
Ty comes through with the second verse about his Cali girl. “Met her out in Beverly Hills,” he sings. “Dolla got too many girls / Met her out in Beverly Hills / All she wear is red bottom heels.” But it’s Nicki who brings the track home with a third and final verse that feels like a far from subtle jab to her nemesis Remy Ma. “I gave these bitches two years, now your time’s up. Bless her heart, she throwin’ shots, but every line sucks.” Okay, girl.
There’s no need for dissecting “Swalla,” it’s straight-up club bait made for bumpin’ and grindin’, sippin’ and twirlin’, twerkin’ and livin’. The end.
