This week’s Song of the Week comes from CAT!
While CAT may or may not be a name you’re entirely familiar with, full name Catherine Pierce may ring a bell or two. The self-proclaimed psychedelic, spiritual explorer is better known as one half of the Los Angeles-based indie-pop sister duo, The Pierces, who aside from releasing five albums are most notably known for their song “Secret,” the official theme tune for ABC Family’s hit series Pretty Little Liars.
Well if you haven’t figured it out by now, the sisters are no longer a duo. Back in the summer of 2015, Catherine and Allison announced that they’ve decided to put their musical partnership on hold, choosing to pursue solo projects instead. AKA: R.I.P… for now.
CAT‘s first up on the solo music front with “You Belong To Me,” the lead single off of her upcoming debut album due out later this year. The song, written by Cat and produced by Jason Lader (Frank Ocean, James Blake, Andre 3000), is perhaps one of the more perfect songs I’ve heard in awhile. It’s haunting and gorgeous and dreamy and Lana Del Rey-slow-twirl-inducing; a song so intimate and bold that when it plays, time itself seems to stop — at least just until the song is over. It’s a real trip! It helps, also, that the just released accompanying Antony Langdon-directed video is a slow-motion work of art.
She’s stunning, stylish and the tune is simply to die for. What’s not to love?
“I shot this video with director Antony Langdon. He’s amazing when it comes to being creative and spontaneous in the moment,” CAT said in a statement. “We went into it wanting to convey a feeling more than a story. The inspiration for the mood was the Rumi quote, ‘What you seek is seeking you’ since the song is about mutual obsession. I kept having dreams and visions of a woman in white wandering through the suburbs not really knowing whether she is chasing something or being chased. The song is about wanting to possess someone because of the way they make you feel and the beautiful madness that can take over.”
