Phoebe Ryan is taking a walk on the dark side in 2017…
After serving us a steady stream of pop releases last year – from the irresistibly addictive “Chronic” to the chilled-out “Boyz n Poizn,” and summertime jam “Dollar Bill” – in addition to collaborating with The Chainsmokers on “All We Know” – her first Billboard Top 20 hit – Phoebe is gearing up for an even bigger 2017 with the premiere of her brand new single: “Dark Side“!
The track, produced by Tove Lo collaborators Elof Loelv and Jason Gill, is a bit different from what we’ve come to expect from Phoebe, as she sings about indulging in a bad romance above gentle acoustic guitar strums: “At your worst, you’re the best/ Baby I don’t want another version, no/ Hard to love, hard to trust/ But don’t change/ Don’t be a better person for me,” she sings before the acoustic sesh suddenly breaks into an array of chilly rhythmic, throbbing club sounds once the chorus strikes.
“‘Cuz I’m in love with your dark side/ I’m in love with your dark side/ I’m in love with your dark side/ So don’t turn on the light/ And stay with me tonight/ Don’t turn on the light.” It’s hypnotic, or as Phoebe may put it.. It’s chronic.
“Releasing ‘All We Know’ with the Chainsmokers was an awesome way to end last year, and it’s made me more excited than ever for people to hear what I’ve been working on,” Phoebe told EW. “[‘Dark Side’] is about being in love with someone who may not necessarily be the best for you, but you’re too deep in it to care. You find the best in them no matter what they do.”
While the beat is thoroughly Top 40, the songcraft is still very much a Phoebe affair, featuring charmingly witty lyrics (“Even if it hurts, I want your heart/ Even at your worst, I love you hard“) and the singer’s distinctive angelic vocals. I’m totally here for it – What do you guys think?
