This week’s Song of the Week comes from MUNA!
With just three weeks left to go until their full-length debut album About U drops on February 3, I figured it’s about time I get a proper post up about these three wonderfully fierce queer women and their latest single: “I Know A Place,” a purely heaven-sent, ’80’s style healing production.
“Cause I know (ooh)/ I know a place we can run (yeah)/ Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon/ Lay down their weapon/ Don’t you be afraid of love and affection/ Just lay down your weapon,” lead vocalist Katie Gavin declares across infectious dance-pop beats, sparkling synths and big handclaps, bringing both the nostalgic sweetness of Shura and Haim to mind, as well as the genuinely earnest feel of Carly Rae Jepsen.
“The way 2 heal the world is not thru fear & hatred,” the brand wrote on their Twitter back in December. “We cannot build a better world without first imagining what that world might look like and by creating that space inside ourselves first. ‘I Know A Place’ is a song about that 🌈. This song was written for queer folks, for people of color, for immigrants, for those who have been made to feel unsafe in their own skin.”
Consider your mission to inspire accomplished, MUNA. THIS is what you a call a pop song!
