It’s been a hot minute since we last heard from LeToya Luckett, formally known as just LeToya.
Aside from a few random single releases last year, the former Destiny’s Child member has mostly been focusing on her acting career, appearing in Ballers with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Killers with Ashton Kutcher and, most recently, as legendary singer Dionne Warwick in the upcoming biopic Dionne. LeToya hasn’t truly put time into the music side of things since she released her 2009 sophomore album Lady Love, which included the singles “Not Anymore” and “She Ain’t Got…” (you know, the one where she sings about beating up a trifling hoe with a bat.)
But all that’s about to change with “Back 2 Life“: A legitimately great, genuinely emotional Soul II Soul-sampling ballad about a failing relationship from the “Torn” hit-maker’s upcoming third studio album Until Then, which is due out early next year.
“So I gotta get back to life… (back to reality)/ Back to life… Back to reality/ Back to life… (back to reality)/ I lie here even though you’re not good for me,” LeToya achingly croons above the slow-tripping hip-hop beats and light flourishes of electronica. It’s got a real striding, sensual feel throughout–it’s on that Tinashe Nightride level with its future, late-night R&B vibes.
“As women, we go through so many changes and on this album I let it out. I talk about my growth and listening back I can hear it. I can hear that growth. [It] doesn’t matter what relationship, mom to kids, to husband — this record is that ‘me time’. That’s why I wanted to go with the record,” LeToya told People. “I’m an actress now, as well. I was leaving the set and going to the studio, still working on the album. I just didn’t want to come out with anything. I really wanted to take my time with it. I hope people can listen to the album and hear my heart. For me, I get healing from music. I want people to experience that. It’s not about being liked, not about the approval. It’s about the experience and pouring my heart. I just want people to hear my heart and that’s it.”
LeToya recently wrapped up three short videos for the singles, one of which depicts the ups and downs of a relationship with her leading man, Thomas Q. Jones – Watch the trailer below!
