The time is now to get familiar with rising singer-raptness Kehlani if you haven’t already y’all!
After years of dropping mixtapes and collaborations, as well as her certified Suicide Squad smash “Gangsta” earlier this year, the rising future-R&B darling is stepping out with her full-length major label debut LP SweetSexySavage on January 27.
“As women we are told that we cannot be multi layered.. we are put in boxes.. we can’t be all the above.. reclaim yourself,” Kehlani expressed in a series of tweets. “The name is supposed to challenge you. The name is supposed to make you question… only to let u find your own answer. But really, it’s me reclaiming myself. Me accepting myself. Good & bad. All the way around. It’s me. Thank you for loving me. #SSS”
The 19-track collection is set to include singles “CRZY” and “Distraction,” as well as this week’s freshly released “Advice“! The moody, sensual R&B cut is all about coming to terms with putting an end to an unhealthy relationship. “Cause how is the man of my dreams not a man of his words?/ And how is the man for me just a man that makes me hurt?,” the songstress questions on the top of the mid-tempo ballad, filled with atmospheric synths and a tripping hip-hop beat — not at all unlike the top-notch late night tunes off of her mixtapes.
“It’s time to take my own/ Take my own advice, take my own advice/ Need me to take my own,” she chillingly belts across the soaring chorus, carrying the track with those gorgeous, early ’00’s R&B-leaning melodies. It’s like sweet, buttah pecan pie y’all!
This’ll be one to look out for next year, for sure.
