Happy Hump Day y’all! Please let me – finally – introduce you to Hey Violet!
Back in August, the band – consisting of Rena Lovelis (lead vocals), her sister Nia Lovelis (drums), Miranda Miller (keys, vocals), Casey Moreta (lead guitar) and Iain Shipp (bass) – dropped their latest EP titled Brand New Moves, their first collection of new music since joining Capitol Records’ roster.
Though a majority of the group have been together since 2008 as Cherri Bomb, their Brand New Moves EP presents the LA-based band as an entirely new alternative rock-meets-pop entity with a fresher and sophisticated new approach. The mini-collection includes thoroughly addictive cuts like the instantly infectious title track, “Pure” and “Fuqboi,” all backed by angsty guitar melodies, atmospheric electronica and melodic vocals recalling Paramore, Avril Lavigne, The Pretty Reckless, Flyleaf and a bit of Lorde.
But while the EP is surely a necessity, Hey Violet have a new song out called “Guys My Age” and it’s truly their best yet. Backed by a tripping electronic R&B pulse and effervescent synths gently floating in the distance, “Guys My Age” recalls the more hard-hitting moments of Lorde‘s Pure Heroine, while still staying true to their signature alternative-pop edge.
The song is all about needing someone on the more mature side of things: “Guys my age don’t know how to treat me/ Don’t know how to treat me/ Don’t know how to treat me/ Guys my age don’t know how to touch me/ Don’t know how to love me good.” Fittingly, the accompanying music video – which was just premiered via V magazine – is a rebellious and moody teenage display of can’t-be-bothered vibes, lit up perfectly by the ever-so-current pink and purple color schemes. “We are so proud of this video,” front woman Rena told V. “We created a dream-like pastel fairytale sequence that we wanna get lost in late at night.”
Hey Violet are nostalgic and fresh feeling all at once, and they only continue to prove themselves as one of this year’s more intriguing acts. Catch them next week on November 10th, where they will be making their U.S. television debut performing “Guys My Age” on The Late Late Show with James Corden.
