Keeping with her steady stream of pop releases this year – from “Chronic” to “Boyz n Poizn” – Phoebe Ryan debuts a new single titled “Dollar Bill,” and this one may be THE ONE to take her to the mainstream.
Featuring go-to feature rapper Kid Ink, the track is as fun and honestly playful as the rest of what we’ve already heard, but with a more uptempo — dare I say, radio-friendly — sound than Phoebe‘s usual left-of-center affair.
“Oh, oh, you can call me (Call me)/ Money, money, money, money, money, money/ Someday I’ll be (We’ll be) money, money,” she declares before the song’s urban-pop production picks up, and launches into arguably her most immediate chorus to date: “Cause baby I’m just living life/ Giving my all, all day and night/ Not gonna stop until/ They’re putting my face on the dollar bill (Dolla, dolla, dolla, dolla).” Go off Queen!
But seriously, this is catchy AF. Phoebe has already established her more punky, urban-ish indie-pop aesthetic, so it’s nice to finally hear what she can do with a more “accessible” version. There’s no doubt about it: Phoebe is going to breakout!
“‘Dollar Bill’ is a song that I wrote last summer,” Phoebe told Vanity Fair. “I Airbnb-ed a 20-foot yacht with some friends. It sounds so fancy, but it’s the tiniest yacht. So we wrote it on a yacht, and we decided to write a song about money. The video is really cool because we wanted to do something fun and kind of cheeky. We were like, ‘O.K., let’s go to Vegas. Let’s have the time of our lives. Let’s see what happens.’ I rented a [McLaren Spider], lime green, suicide doors. I was just driving that thing all over Vegas, whipping it around the strip. It’s fun. We’re not taking it too seriously.”
