Clean Bandit just keep getting better.
The UK dance-pop quartet got us all moving in 2014 with their inescapable smash “Rather Be,” which earned them a Grammy for Best Dance Recording – then had us jumping for joy on the dance floor once again with “Real Love” and the re-released “Stronger.”
But if you think feel-good themed songs is all Clean Bandit has to offer, just wait for “Tears” featuring 2015 UK X Factor winner Louisa Johnson, the lead single off of their upcoming sophomore LP, and possibly one of their very best songs yet.
The tune – co-written by band member Jack Patterson and RØMANS – starts off like an icy electro-ballad, building slowly in the speakers as Louisa beings her heartbreaking tale. “I tried hard to make you want me/ But we’re not supposed to be/ And the truth will always haunt me/ Even though it set me free,” she quivers above the lush synthesized pulsations, before eventually bursting into soaring cries on the song’s defiant chorus: “Tears on the ground, tears on my pillow/ You won’t bring me down/ And I’ll get over you/ These tears will get me through/ And I’ll get over you.”
But that first chorus go-around is merely a tease… each time Louisa hits that chorus, the song swells with more epic vocals and more gorgeous intricate production. And by the time she reaches that final build (“rain at my window, The pain washes out“), the talented UK crooner’s truly taken us to church. And that’s how you kick off a new era folks!
