“With this one I made a real point to tell stories as honestly as I could. It became very clear what it was going to be about, after the breakup. [I] just dove in headfirst and wrote about all of it. [My time with ex Olivia Culpo was] the most meaningful relationship I’ve ever been in, and it was the longest,” Nick Jonas told Out magazine when referring to the inspiration behind his upcoming album Last Year Was Complicated – out June 10.
After revealing his vulnerability on Tove Lo-assisted lead single “Close” and exposing his last hurrah on “Champagne Problems,” Nick is finally ready to really let us in on the emotional break-up with his ex with his latest: “Chainsaw,” soulful synth-soaked piano ballad all about the emotional stages he went through post-breakup. “Keep finding things that you left on purpose/ Did you plan that your timing’s perfect?/ Gotta find a way to be okay,” he confesses before crying out on the heartbreaking hook: “Maybe I’ll just take a chainsaw to the sofa/ Where I held your body close for so long, so long/ I’m gonna break the fucking china/ Cause it’s just one more reminder you’re gone, you’re gone.”
I’m king of loving this softer side of Nick – he sure knows how to sing the hurt away. What do you guys think?
