Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Boy Problems’ Video Is A ’80s-Inspired Pop Dream!

Carly Rae Jepsen, Queen in the art-form that is ’80s-influenced pop greatness, has just treated us to a proper beauty, the official music video to her E•MO•TION banger “Boy Problems“!

In the clip, directed by Petra Collins, we see a sad Carly and her girlfriends crying and laughing at a slumber party as they go on and on about their boy problems (who’s got em?). Carly sings in a sea of glimmering lights and shiny tiaras while her technology-obsessed friends take selfies to death.

“Out of the blue, Petra reached out to ask if she could make a video for her favorite track of the album-Boy Problems. What she didn’t know is that I had been following her online via Instagram and other outlets for a while and had become a HUGE fan of her photographs and artwork,” Carly said in a statement about the video. “I think she has a very gifted eye for a refreshing look at youth and beauty and the way she plays with color always stands out to me. So the answer was an immediate YES! We met that first day in New York and were giddy with creating something new together and I am so pleased for how the dark and glittery scenes we imagined turned out. I hope you enjoy it!”

I don’t see how this is 80s inspired. There’s no 80s hair, no 80s clothing, no 80s accessories… Although many of Carly’s songs were 80s inspired on that album (which I loved), this video is not. That comment was obviously made by someone who was born after the 80s who thinks this is what the 80s looked like.
