Crafted by Swedish dreamteam Mattman & Robin and “Used To Love You” co-writers Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, “Make Me Like You” is a bright and springy, shimmering pop explosion that sees Gwen confessing her affection for that special man in her life – That man being her fellow The Voice coach, Blake Shelton! “Hey, wait a minute/ No, you can’t do this to me/ Hey, wait a minute/ No, that’s not fair/ Hey, wait a minute/ You’re on me like jewelry/ I really like you, but I’m so scared,” she admits over the punchy dance beat.
And then, in comes the spectacular chorus: “Ooh, why’d you have to go and make me like you? / This is a feeling I’m not used to/ Ooh, why’d you have to go and make me like you?/ I’m so mad at you, cause now you got me missing you,” Gwen repeatedly chants. Throw in some infectious shout-along coo’s (“YOU!“), those sweet harmonies, summery disco-tinged licks of guitar, and you’ve got an instant earworm upon the very first listen.
“Oh God, thank God that I found you
Oh God, cause now you got me missing you
Oh God, thank God that I found you
I’m so mad at you,
Cause now you got me missing you”
“Make Me Like You” is simply great: It’s uplifting, insanely catchy, perfectly polished, and just the smash Gwen needs to really cement her musical comeback. And while it, admittedly, sounds like a lot of things – her very own “Sweet Escape,” Maroon 5, Kylie Minogue, DNCE – it’s still wholeheartedly classic Gwen Stefani at her very best.
Gwen has partnered with Target for the first-ever live music video event in support of “Make Me Like You,” which is set to air during the 2016 Grammy Awards on Monday (February 15). The music video will shoot live and will air during a 4-minute commercial break that later will be uploaded to VEVO as the official music video for the single. Stay tuned – OUR GIRL IS REALLY BACK!!!
