The track serves as the “first official single” off of the much-teased new album ANTI, which is expected to be released this week.
Following the previously released “FourFiveSeconds,” “American Oxygen” and “Bitch Better Have My Money,” the subdued, yet seductive gem – produced by Boi-1da and co-written by PARTYNEXTDOOR – almost instantly feels like a return-to-form as she flaunts her island accent across a bouncy, chilled-out tropical-inspired groove (See Unapologetic‘s “No Love Allowed,” Loud‘s “Man Down,” etc.) “Work, work, work, work, work, work/ He said me haffi/ Work, work, work, work, work, work/ He see me do mi/ Dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt,” she ridiculously mumbles throughout as if she just got her wisdom teeth taken out and the Novocaine hasn’t worn off yet.
Given the title and the two big names behind the song, “Work” doesn’t immediately sound like a #1 smash but it definitely grows on you and I kind of love how unintelligible it is. I can’t wait to hear what else she has in store for us on ANTI – Stay tuned!
Ri and Drake shot the video for the song at L.A.’s Eagle Rock Plaza earlier this month.
