Fact: Swedes are incapable of making bad music. Okay, so that may not be entirely true, but it is a reality for anyone who listens to the likes of Robyn, Lykke Li, Tove Lo, Erik Hassle, Loreen, Zara Larsson, and I could really go on for forever.
22-year-old Lotta Lindgren aka LÉON is a relatively new name to add to the steadily growing list of excellent Swede-pop music makers. Her music blends pure, fresh production with soulful vocals, resulting in a kind of retro nostalgia-meets-next level sound. And already, she’s caught the right sort of attention: LÉON‘s debut track “Tired Of Talking” blew up across the blogs, reached #1 on Hype Machine and caused an international storm. She’s also found a fan in Katy Perry, which definitely carries some weight (but let’s not give her all the credit).
“Treasure” — the title song off of the EP, for instance — comes surging in with an Adele-like urgency before diving into some Ellie Goulding, Sara Barielles, Tove Lo-like slick, left-of-center electro-pop that sounds both radio-friendly and forward-thinking all at the same time. “I was your treasure, treasure, treasure,” she declares across the song’s sleek synth-pop pulsations, colored by twinkling piano lines and tripping R&B beats.
Other tracks from the EP offer richly layered production (crafted with her production partner Agrin Rahmani) — and even more complex emotions: Gliding in on warm synth flares and a strutting, finger-snapping funkiness, “Tired of Talking” is a gorgeously angst pop slice. “Nobody Cares,” is a pulsating thrill ride and the Lana Del Rey-like “Leon’s Lullaby,” is a slow-burning, nostalgic ode to a former lover. (My personal favorite!)
With just a small handful of songs at our disposal, it’s hard to fully grasp what LÉON is all about. But, judging by what she’s already offered us, her potential seems limitless. Bring on the full album!
