Brandon Flowers The Desired Effect is shaping up to be one immensely great body of work. Everything from this project we have heard up until now has sounded like a effortless mix of The Killers‘ last two albums and Brandon‘s own style, but with his latest “I Can Change“ there’s a clearer sense that Brandon‘s sound is definitely being pushed.
The Ariel Rechtshaid-produced number continues his streak of ’80’s-flavored pop magic. It beings as a ballad before shifting into infectious driving beat that samples the 1984 US Dance #1 “Smalltown Boy” by Bronski Beat. After repeated listens of both songs, the sample proves itself to be a smart creative decision; it’s really well done. They are a match made in Brandon Killers heaven.
Ariel may be at the helm of The Desired Effect, but Brandon‘s identity as a musician is so strong and fully realized that this new direction sounds like a natural progression in his evolution. This album is seriously gonna be great – I can’t wait!
