It’s been more than a minute since we last heard from “Cooler Than Me” hit-maker Mike Posner. After recording and putting aside two entire sophomore records, Pages and Sky High, Mike went on a temporary break and broke free from his RCA recording contract while he kept busy penning tracks for some of the biggest artists in the game: Justin Bieber (“Boyfriend“), Maroon 5 (“Sugar“), Nick Jonas (“Numb“), etc.
Mike returns from hiatus this week with the premiere of his brooding new single “I Took a Pill in Ibiza,” his first release under his new home at Island Records. The Martin Terefe co-penned number sees Mike trading in the hip-hop beats for a stripped-down acoustic sound on the somber song, which he tells a emotional tale about fame inspired by his personal experiences.
“It’s not the job of the art to accommodate me and make me more money, make me more famous and get me more girls,” Mike told The Huffington Post. “I think I was in that mindset after ‘Cooler Than Me‘ came out. I started getting some of those things, and I thought, ‘How about if I get more?’ I think for a period of time I did think art was there to serve me, but it took me a minute to reset.”
