Resident belty matriarch and OG American Idol Kelly Clarkson, with new baby in tow, just reminded all the bitches who she is with her new album Piece by Piece. Although I found the album to be lacking in immediate hits (I still hold Kelly to Breakaway standards), no part of me was disappointed to hear our girl kill it in with this deeply personal album. The songs range in genre from catchy bubblegum pop to intuitive love ballads. Kelly‘s voice, quite like a souped up John Deere on crack, has an industrial power to it unlike many of her peers – she can literally sing anything. That power combined with intimate song lyrics featured on tracks like “Run, Run, Run” and “War Paint,” see the badassery of Kelly Clarkson shine through like light through a prism (Sorry Katy).
From start to finish, Piece by Piece is a cohesive and enjoyable listen. There are a few songs that stand out to me as unadulterated and complete touchdowns, but all in all, the album glows with the brightness of a thousand suns. Lead single “Heartbeat Song,” is a catchy pop song true to our time, with its infectious beat and earworm of a chorus. Swedish matron of glory herself Sia pens the next song off the album and rumored second single, titled “Invincible.” This is possibly the most traditional Kelly Clarkson song on the album, as it showcases both her insane vocal technique and range. If this song isn’t a summer hit, I’m going to jump off a bridge. Piece By Piece maintains speed throughout, with powerhouse songs like “Someone” and the dub-stepy “Take You High” rounding off the opening section.
Piece by Piece then takes a step back and slows down towards the middle. “Run, Run, Run” featuring H.R.H. John Legend, though indeed a Tokio Hotel cover, is an absolute masterpiece. Legend and Clarkson sound beautiful together – the lush string orchestrations playing under the main melody perpetuate this song to the next level, and by that I mean I 100% cried during my first listen. Rounding of the album are a few more grade A cuts, but unfortunately Piece by Piece begins to lose a little bit of steam towards its closing. Songs like “Let Your Tears Fall,” “War Paint” and “Dance With Me” stay on par with previous songs such as “Invincible,” but the ending left me with a craving for at least two more songs that I really really loved. This album may not go down as her very best, but Piece by Piece is undeniably a delicious testament to how good our girl Kellegend is. She’s been in the game for quite some time now, but she has yet to disappointment and we are on album seven y’all. You go, Kelly. I can’t wait for convertible season!
