The #R8 Era Begins: Rihanna Drops ‘FourFiveSeconds’ Featuring Paul McCartney & Kanye West!

It’s been two long years since the release of 2012’s Unapologetic – her longest run between albums to date – but rest assured, Rihanna has finally made her Rih-turn! Over the weekend (Saturday evening to be exact), the Navy leader offered up the first taste of the #R8 era when she randomly dropped a new song onto iTunes entitled, “FourFiveSeconds“, featuring Kanye West and Beatles legend Paul McCartney. And, to everyone’s surprise, it was not what we were expecting at all from the diva who usually churns out urban-leaning dance-pop hits. Indeed, RiRi has really gone and veered into an unexpected direction. “FourFiveSeconds,” is basically an adult contemporary jam that sees Ri laying down her raw vocals over a minimalistic guitar-led production. No hints of any modern production whatsoever, it’s a folky acoustic number with scattered verses from Kanye and guitar melodies courtesy of Sir McCartney. With that said, after almost 48 hours later, I do find myself enjoying “FourFiveSeconds” quite a lot. Sure it presents itself to be something bigger than it actually is, but its undeniably a catchy tune that is already shaping up to be a major career move for the Unapologetic diva. This is going to be one hell of an interesting #R8 campaign. What do you guys think?

  1. it sounds good to me. relaxing and grown up

  2. I think your last sentence really summed it up for me.

I am a diehard Rihanna stan, so I am just buckling up and ready for the ride.

  3. What on earth is this…

  4. this song has 9 credited song writers! wtf this was lazy and it sounds ripped off of a movie soundtrack. doesn’t have the impact on like russian roulette did, etc. this is lazy. rest of album will most likely be classic rihanna they just wanna see if well jump on something else but really nah

  5. this song has 9 credited song writers and ZERO of them are rihanna lol! wtf this was lazy and it sounds ripped off of a movie soundtrack. doesn’t have the impact on like russian roulette did, etc. this is lazy. rest of album will most likely be classic rihanna they just wanna see if well jump on something else but really nah

  6. Wow. I’m in shock, I have to say definitely did not see this coming. Very interesting

  7. I don’t like it. Sounds like folk music and the lyrics all seem borrowed from different songs. I knew all of the words before they were sung on first listen.

  8. This song is utterly boring. NEXT. I am not even here for the nearly raw Rihanna vocals. Ugh. No thanks. Kanye does nothing for it either. Sounds too unfinished and neither of them are this type of artist. Studio enhancements PLEASE!

  9. After 2 years, we get this.. WTF

  10. Is this the first single? Or just a promo?

  11. This is not very bad, but not very good either. I hope it’s just a buzz single, cause we all know Rihanna can do much better.

  12. I am so hurt and disappointed, I have been talking about the new rihanna era for ages now speculating and wishing for her to just drop an album out of thin air like beyonce. I was seriously expecting some serious Diamonds game changer left field new wave jam… this is just… A WHOLE different kind of left field. If this is what to expect from the new album I don’t want it, I’ll wait for the next one.

  13. Lol no thanks

  14. yeah no…..horrible choice for a 1st single.

  15. I L-O-V-E THIS!!! Easily one of the best Rhianna songs. Mature, shows her voice, and has actual style. None of the stupid hip-hop shit she normally does. Granted, she does it well, but this is such a wonderful, refreshing and welcome change. I have a new respect for her.

  16. I don’t know why but I guess I was kind of hoping for another club banger…to be honest this really took me by surprise because with its country/folksy sound this sounds like the last thing I’d expect from Riri! I guess this one will have to grow on me because right now I’m pretty indifferent to it. Hopefully something way better is next cos we all know Rih can do better than this.

  17. It’s funny how almost everyone is complaining how this is too different, too simple… I mean it’s Rihanna, she’s unapologetic, and brilliant… actually every first single was unexpected, something new… from rock urban ballad Russian Roulette to EDM smash We Found Love to weird electronic pop Sia ballad Diamonds… she’s a trendsetter, that’s a fact… and I’m pretty sure that if she’d come out with a track similar to Diamonds everyone would complain how it is nothing new…
