Four months after the tragic death of their original member Simone Battle, the ladies of G.R.L. are moving forward with the premiere of their special tribute, “Lighthouse“! Produced and written alongside Dr. Luke and Cirkut, the touching power ballad sees the girls – Lauren Bennett, Paula Van Oppen, Natasha Slayton, and Emmalyn Estrada – joining forces to support each other when the going gets tough. “When the night gets cold and the lights go out / The sun is gone behind the clouds, and you feel lost and I’ll reach out to guide you home with my lighthouse,” the four-piece sing in the soaring hook. If the song doesn’t spark some emotions then its accompanying video featuring photos and videos of Simone from her upbringing to her G.R.L. performing days should do the trick. It’s truly a bit difficult to watch, but a beautiful tribute nonetheless. Rest in peace Simone.
“We rehearsed the other day without her, and it’s just weird. But she was so passionate about singing and this group, and I feel like we’re keeping her memory alive by being together,” Emmalyn, 22, told People. “But right now we’re focused on the song and the positive message overall, about being together in hard times. We’re taking everything else one day at a time.”
“We learned so much from her,” Lauren, 25, continued. “In the video you can see her passion for performance, and you can see her strumming along to the music in the beginning. It’s us showing that she’s still part of the group. She’ll always be part of this group.”
