Almost two years after the release of her underrated self-titled album, Ciara is giving fans a first taste of her new material with the premiere of “I Bet“! The track is set to serve as the lead single off her upcoming sixth studio album Jackie, which is named after her mother Jackie Harris and is set to be released later this year via Epic Records. Produced by Harmony Samuels and co-written by Ciara and Rock City, “I Bet” sees an emotional CiCi singing about a lover who did her wrong over a smooth-gliding, mid-tempo R&B beat. “I bet you start loving me/ As soon as I start loving someone else/ Somebody better than you/ I bet you start needing me/ As soon as you see me with someone else/ Somebody other than you,” she sings on the hook. “And I know that it hurts/ You know that it hurts your pride/ But you thought the grass was greener on the other side.” The song clearly is about her failed relationship with ex-fiance Future, but it’s pretty clear she still has love for him. “I’m singing this song ’cause I love you / Right now it’s killing me ’cause now I have to find someone else when all I wanted was you.”
While it may not be the smartest choice to release a ballad to kick off your new album campaign, there’s something about “I Bet” that really works. The chorus is great and I love the throwback R&B vibe it carries that recalls a little bit of Usher, Brandy, Monica, etc. What do you guys think?
Ciara’s new single “I Bet” will be released on January 21st!
