Song of the Week: Bonnie McKee ‘American Girl’

This weeks Song of the Week comes from award-winning singer-songwriter Bonnie McKee! After spending years penning hits for others: Katy Perry‘s “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Part of Me,” Britney‘s “Hold It Against Me,” Ke$ha‘s “C’Mon,” and Taio CruzDynamite,” Bonnie is finally ready to step out on her own with her first major-label debut album scheduled for release later this year. Here we have “American Girl,” the lead single and first offering from the project. The track is an anthemic pop jam that showcases her powerhouse vocals, knack for big choruses, and relatable lyrical point of view. It’s power-pop masterpiece with an earworm of a catchy chorus destined to help establish her as a artist in her own right. “I really did fall in love in a 7-11 parking lot at 12 years old. I remember trying to get people to buy us cigarettes and beer and sitting on his skateboard, so I’m describing my own coming of age as a teenage girl in America, and how the whole world was open to me and I could be anything,” Bonnie said about the track. “The song captures that triumphant feeling of seeing what the future holds, doing whatever you want, and making it your own.”
